Chicken Surprise

Our dogs love this meal

In a large pot, place chopped fresh chicken pieces (no bones), carrots, tomato, capsicum and rice.

Cover with water (three times the amount of rice used).

Cover with a lid, bring it to the boil then reduce to a simmer for 25—30 minutes.

Remove from the heat and leave covered to cool (this fluffs the rice nicely).

You can add pumpkin or potatoes for a change, or substitute pasta for the rice (reduce the water to two times the quantity of pasta). We have even added beetroot for flavour.

Meat Laksa

Our dogs love this one too

In a large pot, gentle saute the meat. Add a variety of vegetables (we used brocolli, capsicum, carrots, beans and cucumber) and stir fry for about three minutes.

Add two cups of water and one cup of milk (coconut flavoured if you wish) and bring to the boil. Add pasta or noodles and reduce to simmer for ten minutes. Chop up two hard-boiled eggs and mix through.

Wait to cool and serve it up. The dogs made it disappear quickly.

Training Treat

Ditch the liver chips for this.

Calf or ox liver is best served fresh. Slice it thinly, coat in vegetable oil infused with garlic (or dust with garlic powder).  Place the slices on a tray and put in a preheated (180o C) oven for 20 minutes.  Cut into small pieces and allow to cool on the bench. Pop the bits into your bait pouch and watch your beddy perform! (Not suitable to freeze or keep).

Half-time Treat

A good distraction for when you just can’t be there.

If you have a Kong for your dog, Thread it with a piece of string then pack small cubes of meat and dog biscuits loosely around the string inside the kong.

I f you don’t have a kong, put a small hole in a plastic container and thread the string. Remember to remove the container before using or some plastic may be ingested

Place it in the freezer and store until needed.

Next time you have to leave your pet at home alone, suspend the kong by tying the string to something out of reach (we use the garage door opener) and when it defrosts, the kong will fall to the ground, rewarding them for their patience. When you get home they will have enjoyed a light snack, and look forward to the next time they are “Home Alone”.
