[Grooming
Bedlington Terriers require regular grooming. They need to be brushed regularly to remove bits and matts that form in the coat. The Bedlington coat is a wool that grows continually and does not shed. For the dogs’ comfort they need to be clipped to a comfortable and manageable length on a regular basis. Matts create hot spots in the coat and may cause skin irritation, particularly in summer. A sure sign of a hot spot is constant licking of the area.
Dogs that aren’t clipped regularly may get a Clipper rash from the blades, or become stressed in the heat of summer. They can also become difficult to handle on the grooming table.
If you are local we can teach you to groom your own dog. Alternatively we can suggest a number of good dog-groomers who would be willing to clip your pet (usually $30.00 to $50.00 per clip).
Buying a Bedlington
When buying your Bedlington, (or any registered pure breed dog) please consider the expense incurred by the breeder in getting the puppy to saleable age .
Often there is a stud fee involved (especially for outbreeding), which incurs a vet check fee before being sent to the stud. If the stud dog lives elsewhere there can be considerable transport costs as well.
Once the bitch is pregnant, a pregnancy test and ultrasound confirms the success of the mating without having to wait nine weeks and a second ultrasound may be necessary if the vet has any concerns.
Delivery might be at home or at the surgery. Either way there is a vet check for the mother and pups and possible dew claw removal a few days later.
The litter has to be registered with the local Canine Council then further registration transfer fees may have to be paid when the pup is purchased.
There will be at least one vaccination prior to sale and the pup will have been wormed weekly till six weeks then fortnightly. Some breeders will have had their dogs microchipped for identification.
Add to this feeding loving and caring for them and the cost rises. If the bitch has a small litter the cost is shared around less. Most breeders are in it for the advancement of the breed and rarely cover costs when they sell their pups.
If you want a particular breed, please consider these points when determining fair price, and ask the breeder what the price includes. We hope your search is fruitful and your puppy yields years of love and happiness.
